Ewell Blackwell, nicknamed the whip because of his nasty side armed delivery, was signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent in 1942 and made his major league debut April of that same year. In 7 and a half seasons in Cincinnati, Ewell won over 20 games once, was an All Star 6 seasons, from 1946 to 1951. He came very close to back to back no hitters in 1939 when he no hit the Braves and then on his next outing he held the Dodgers hitless until the 9th inning. Ewell was traded to the Yankees in 1952 and won 13 games over the next season and a half including a World Series game. He retired in 1955 after a short comeback failed with the A's. Ewell won 82 games in 10 seasons and lost 78 with an ERA of 3.30.
